Tutorial: Fix Xbox 360 NXE Freezing and Slowdown by Clearing Hard Drive Cache

Posted on March 21st, 2009 by The Tipster in Tutorials, Xbox 360

If you’re like me and play the Xbox 360, you were excited to get the NXE (new xbox experience) dashboard several months back. At first, I was thrilled with it and thought it was great. But gradually over the past few months, I’ve enjoyed it less and less for one reason and one reason only - constant lag and freezing when accessing the friends list or guide menu. Many times while playing a game, if I go into the friends list option or pull up the guide, I’d encounter a frozen screen for anywhere from 20 seconds to over a minute in length. Obviously, that’s completely unacceptable especially if you’re in middle of a game such as Halo Wars or Street Fighter IV.

Luckily, I’ve found a way to eliminate the problem of NXE freezing… clearing the Xbox 360 hard drive cache. Boot up your Xbox 360 system and go to the system option. Highlight your 20, 60, or 120 GB hard drive option and press Y, then press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X. Then you will get a message asking you if you would like to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage device. Select yes and the process will be complete. Your Xbox 360 dashboard should be free of the freezing and slowdown problem.

No it won’t. But after a few weeks, my dashboard has started acting slow again. I hope Microsoft fixes this soon.
